A group of people met on Sunday, October 2, 1938 in the rock building located at the corner of Jackson Heights and Louisiana Streets in the city of Palestine, Texas for the purpose of organizing an independent, orthodox, fundamental Baptist Church.
Rev. Woodson M. Mims, formerly pastor at Calvary Baptist Church, Grand Prairie, Texas, who preached the morning sermon acted as moderator and Bro R.E. Woodson, layman and member of First Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas, acted as clerk.
The meeting was called to order and Bro. B.B. Andrews made a motion that the church be formed, and Bro. Harvey Blackwell seconded the motion. Charter members of the new church are: Mr. & Mrs. B.B. Andrews, Mrs. Sylvia Martin, Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Blackwell, Mrs. M.B. Gregory, J.L. Gregory, Robert Lambright, John Howard Jr., Lewellyn & Evelyn Andrews, Lucille Martin, Frances Martin, Mr. & Mrs. J. Rodgers, Mrs. J.L. Roberson, Dorris Roberson, Laneta Lamb, Mrs. Willie May Barringer, Mrs. Ghas Kirby.
Motion was made by Bro. B.B. Andrews that the church adopt the name of Calvary Baptist Church and the motion was seconded by Bro. Harvey Blackwell.
Nominations were asked for the office of treasurer and Bro. Blackwell was nominated by Mrs. J.L. Roberson, Mrs. J.L. Roberson was nominated by Bro. Blackwell. A motion was made and seconded that the nominations cease and a vote was taken which gave the office to Bro. Harvey Blackwell.
Nominations were asked for the office of clerk and Mrs. M.B. Gregory was nominated by Mrs. J.L. Roberson, Bro. B.B. Andrews was nominated by Bro. Harvey Blackwell, Bro. J. Rogers was nominated by Bro. B.B. Andrews. A motion was made and seconded that the nominations cease. A vote was taken and Mrs. M.B. Gregory was elected to the office of clerk.
A motion was carried to support a student-evangelist in China through the office of the WORLD FUNDAMENTAL MISSIONARY BAPTIST FELLOWSHIP with the main office in Chicago, Illinois. The church went on record as being in full fellowship with and ever active in support of the WORLD FUNDAMENTAL MISSIOANRY BAPTIST FELLOWSHIP of which Dr. J. Frank Norris is the most widely known minister supporting it.
A motion was made by Bro. B.B. Andrews that the meeting be brought to a close and the motion was seconded by Bro. Harvey Blackwell. The motion carried.
