Grab your Bible and get Matthew 8 v. 1-3 and let me show you something important! Here we have a Leper. You really need to know what leprosy does to a man in order to appreciate this miracle. But this leper “came” to Jesus [vs 2]. Here is something important to see. That leper could have just piled up in his pajamas and sat on the couch watching ‘streaming church services’ on-line. He wouldn’t have had to wrap himself up to hide the rotting tissues or covered himself in ointment to hide the stench of leprosy. But he decided, despite his circumstances, to get dressed and GO see Jesus. At some point FAITH must be strong enough to get us off the couch. I wonder if a faith that cannot get me beyond my front door will be able to get me to heaven. [In Daniel ch 3 The powers that be told everyone, “to you it is commanded, O people” that when ordered “ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up” OR else. But three who had faith in God said “no”. They were threatened with a fiery furnace if they didn’t bow. But they replied ‘we will not bow to you or your gods and if you throw us in the furnace, our God will save us. “But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up” 3:18]. Back to Matthew 8: So, the Leper came to Jesus and said “Lord, if thou wilt…” Let me tell you sir, Ma’am – the Lord most certainly IS willing and able to make you clean! God is not willing that ANY should perish but that ALL should come to repentance. But Notice what the Leper said! He said he WANTED TO BE CLEAN not just made happy in his sin. That Leper IS unclean, and he knows it. He is defiled and filthy and he knows it. He doesn’t deny it. He wants to be RID OF HIS UNCLEANNESS! He doesn’t say “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me comfortable in my sin. NO! He doesn’t ask Jesus to make the leprosy not hurt and not stink. Jesus will not make our sin painless. He will not make sins consequences less severe or more endurable. The Leper doesn’t love his leprosy, he hates it and see’s it for what it is. He wants to be free of the leprosy and all its consequences Amen! Jesus removes the sin AND its consequences and delivers us from the sin itself. So, the Leper is not merely delivered from the pain and suffering, the filthy rags’, and the horrible stench. He is not merely delivered from the death sentence of Leprosy. No, Jesus heals him of the leprosy and takes away ALL the consequences of the leprosy. Notice also that the Leper worshipped Jesus BEFORE he asked him for deliverance. Jesus IS LORD and deserves to be recognized as such regardless of whether or not he does a miracle in my life. Lastly notice that the leprosy is immediately cleansed! Since God has granted me immediate cleansing, I want to render to him my immediate obedience, trust, faith, worship, and love. I do not want him to have to wait for conditions to be right.
