Through the perspective, mind, heart and hand of Luke [8 v. 4-15] the Holy Spirit [ Romans 8:9] recorded pieces of what he had recorded by those of both Matthew [13:1-23] and John Mark 4:1-20], {some seminaries have mistakenly led their students to believe wrongly that the disciples copied from each other to augment their memory; and those students have gone out teaching this error to their congregations. We Bible believers know of course that the Holy Spirit doesn’t need his ‘memory’ augmented}. We know that the disciples were not left to scratch out their own accounts of these words of the Living Lamb of God as best they could. No, each of these servants wrote exactly what HE was supposed to, in exactly the words HE was inspired to write [2 Peter 1:21]. Turn your attention to the text where we see in verse 5 that as the sower ‘sowed’ his seed, some “fell by the WAYSIDE” and it was “trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it”. Verse 12 explains this to us – these “wayside” seeds are they ‘that hear {the preaching of the gospel} but then comes the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts,  lest they should believe and be saved”. *BELIEVE and BE SAVED! Years ago, I was preaching up in Tennessee and it had been a clear presentation of the gospel hope, of redemption, of salvation in Christ. There were two young couples present and it appeared one of the wives was very much under conviction of the Holy Spirit and listening intently. During the conclusion I had asked everyone to stand with their heads bowed and eyes closed, and I asked plainly “is there anyone here who now knows you’re not saved. Is there anyone here who, if you died this moment, you’d stand guilty and condemned before God to face His justice and judgment?” That young woman of perhaps 26 raised her hand quickly. It seemed to me she was that moment at the point of tears. I said “I just have one more question; if you know you are lost and without Christ wouldn’t you like to come this moment and be set free from your burden of sin?” Again, that young woman’s hand went up. Her young husband beside her reached over and forced her hand down and shook his head “no”. She looked stunned and made no further move to step out of the pew. “Then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved” [Luke 8:12, Mark 4:15]. Many times, have I seen the devil use a husband, a wife, a parent, a friend to come and “take away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved”. I never saw that young couple in church again. Did she ever get saved? I don’t know, I never saw her in church again. Who are these foul birds that devoured the seeds which fell by the wayside? They’re husbands, wives, children, distractions. Perhaps this virus sweeping the world has finally shaken your confidence in this temporary and precarious life?
